If you have suffered from extensive decay and dental wear, a filling may not be enough to restore your tooth. A dental crown can provide strength and protection and restore the form of a damaged or worn tooth. Port Clinton Dental Care in Highland Park, IL, provides a choice of quality materials for durable, long-lasting dental crowns. Dr. Michael Wasserman also offers implant-supported crowns for patients who need to replace missing teeth with a lifelike, lasting restoration.
A Solution to Rebuild Your Smile
A traditional dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering or cap placed over a compromised tooth. A crown can save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted due to trauma or damage from extreme decay. Crowns are commonly placed to support teeth after successful root canal treatment or treatment for a cavity that is too large for a filling. A quality dental crown restores full function to a weakened tooth, providing renewed structure and strength for biting and chewing. It can be crafted to blend seamlessly with your smile, remaining virtually undetectable.
Crowns can also be used for purely cosmetic reasons. Patients who have an oddly-shaped tooth, a deep crack, or severe discoloration can use one or more dental crowns to improve the appearance of their smile when porcelain veneers or teeth whitening cannot achieve their goals. For patients who have lost teeth, dental crowns can be used to help replace a single missing tooth. Patients who choose an implant-based solution will receive a specially made crown designed to attach to a dental implant.
Port Clinton Dental Care provides a number of materials for dental crowns, such as:
- All Ceramic or Porcelain – Crowns made from these tooth-colored materials will look the most natural in your smile and are very popular, especially for visible front teeth.
- Metal Crowns – Gold alloy and base metals make a very strong crown, suitable for use in the back of the jaw. These restorations are fracture resistant, best for chewing and grinding, but not the best choice cosmetically.
- Porcelain Fused to Metal – This type of crown is stronger than an all porcelain crown because it is connected to a metal structure. It offers aesthetic benefits, though is not as natural-looking as pure porcelain.
- Zirconia Crowns – Zirconia provides a premium quality crown, offering excellent durability as well as a natural, life-like appearance.
Our team will work with you and help choose the best type of crown for your unique needs.
If you are suffering from dental damage and decay, we can rebuild your smile with a customized, lifelike dental crown
Receiving Your Crown
Prior to placing your crown, Dr. Wasserman will prepare the tooth, removing any damaged tissue and creating a stable base for your restoration. Once your tooth is prepared, we will take an impression that will be sent to our partner lab for fabrication. This process typically takes about two weeks. While your new crown is in fabrication, you can wear a temporary crown provided by Dr. Wasserman. When your permanent crown is ready, we will ensure it fits properly and you are satisfied with the results. Dr. Wasserman will then securely bond it into place, for a completely restored smile.
